Description

James Harris West, his brother and Leslie Liles Allen's Great Grandfather ran The Decherd Hotel that was destroyed in the April 1909 tornadoes that hit TN and AL. His daughter, Leslie Liles Allen's grandmother, came to Kingston Springs to live with her great uncle that co-owned the Kingston Springs Hotel with Mr. Beard. She lived in one of the cottages and then moved in with Aunt Lucy West (her half-sister) that had also moved to KS. William came to KS to be the telegrapher and all the West family from Sherwood, Sinking Cove and Decherd area made their living someway with the railroad. William’s Dad, Simpson West, was a conductor for the railroad. Simpson West was born 1822 in Franklin County, TN. At age 50 he was still working as a conductor in 1870 census.
